Mapping climate risk and building spatial intelligence.
Technical Advisor in Earth Observation & Geospatial Analytics, with extensive experience bridging spatial data science, satellite Earth observation, and climate & environmental risk for global impact.
About Me
I am an Independent Consultant and Technical Advisor based in Paris, working in Earth Observation and Geospatial Analytics with a focus on climate and environmental issues. My work includes climate risk modelling, such as developing vulnerability functions for flood, wind, and fire risks to help with financial decisions. I also work on multi-hazard spatial analysis, canopy change detection, early warning systems, and building reproducible geospatial data pipelines that follow FAIR principles.
My career combines experience in corporate consulting, academic research, and international climate change adaptation projects. I specialise in using satellite remote sensing data and advanced spatial modelling to measure environmental hazards, assess climate risks, and create data-driven tools for sustainable development.
I have an MSc in Geographical Information Science from the University of Southampton. My research there focused on global predictive wildfire modelling using fuzzy logic systems. For more details about my ongoing professional development, please visit my Training & Resources page.
I am currently a PlanAdapt Fellow, working on urban heat resilience and climate action projects around the world. As a Technical Advisor, I also contribute to the teams at Green Box, AstraTerra, and Blu-H.

Professional Activities
Collaborating with international research networks, insurers, and development organisations to deliver geospatial solutions.
Independent Geospatial Consulting
Providing custom spatial data pipeline engineering, Earth Observation analytics, and climate vulnerability modelling for international organisations, commercial insurers, and research entities. Key focus areas include:
- Earth Observation (EO) & Remote Sensing: Developing automated cloud-native processing pipelines (Google Earth Engine, AWS) for agricultural parcel monitoring, multi-sensor canopy change detection, early warning alert systems, and scalable land-cover classification.
- Urban Land Use Planning: Designing GIS-based spatial decision-support platforms that integrate statutory zoning, planning policy, and high-resolution environmental datasets (soils, elevation, land cover) for urban agriculture suitability, land degradation neutrality, and sustainable town and country planning.
- Catastrophe Risk Modelling: Led GIS research, spatial analysis, and flood/wildfire hazard mapping projects within modelling divisions serving the European insurance market, both as an employed researcher and later through independent consulting engagements.
Pro-Bono Technical Advisory Work
Advising early-stage ventures, non-profits, and networks on geospatial data operations, Earth Observation, and smart systems architecture (digital twins) — including Green Box (tropical forest protection, indigenous community empowerment, and transparent carbon/biodiversity markets), Blu-H (humanitarian environmental intelligence, satellite-based flood monitoring), AstraTerra (space, smart cities, and connected communities consultancy), and PlanAdapt (urban climate resilience, including the COOL4ALL initiative).
Selected Projects
Practical applications of remote sensing, machine learning, and spatial architectures to real-world challenges.

github.com/gvddoolDestination Earth (DestinE) for Urban Heat
Developed a city-level case study concept utilising DestinE digital twin infrastructures to simulate, analyse, and mitigate urban heat island phenomena under severe climate conditions.
Agroforestry & EUDR Compliance
Implemented spatial analytics workflows and hyperspectral unmixing strategies to delineate field boundaries in West Africa, ensuring scalable cocoa traceability in accordance with EU Deforestation Regulations.
Satellite-Based Tree Health Monitoring
Constructed predictive models for monitoring tree health and environmental stress in reforestation plots, integrating Sentinel-2 and Planet imagery with ERA5 meteorological parameters.
Global Predictive Wildfire Model
Built a global-scale wildfire susceptibility model applying data-driven Fuzzy Logic operators to map fire hazard potential across diverse biomes and weather conditions.
